Trainer’s Favorite … Equipment
There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of types of fitness equipment to use at the gym, it’s hard to know where to start. We asked the trainers of Under Armour’s training team to uncover their favorites.
Dumbbells are one of the most — if not the most — versatile equipment choice because we’re not restricted for any movement. They are multi-joint, multi-directional and can challenge every level of fitness with load, range of motion and athleticism.
— Rich Hesketh, athletic development coach at DECAMAN Athletics
The sled is a staple for anyone I work with, including myself. The beauty of the sled lies in its ability to be used by all populations and for any type of goal. FX has a training philosophy that helps structure each training session: move better, move faster, move stronger and move longer. The sled can be used for any portion of this training model.
— Nate Costa, owner of the Under Armour Performance Center powered by FX Studios
Heavy ropes are a metabolic monster and are a great tool for elevating your heart rate without having to run or jump.
— Michael Piercy, 2017 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year and owner of The Lab Fitness
TRX SUSPENSION TRAINER
I use the suspension trainer with swimmers and other clients because it challenges the core and body in three dimensions.
— Kari Woodall, swim coach, firefighter and owner of BLAZE Fitness
It’s a great tool for pulling exercises: Challenging the posterior chain will help improve posture for those who sit at a desk all day.
— Marc Coronel, owner of Open Mind Fitness and master instructor for Trigger Point
It’s useful when working with my elite athletes and clientele of all levels. I like that the TRX straps can be used anywhere, for any level of fitness and for any fitness goal.
— Todd Durkin, internationally recognized author, motivational speaker and owner of Fitness Quest 10
TRX is my favorite because it works on posterior chain/posture/core muscles from wherever you are.
— Tim DiFrancesco, former head strength and conditioning coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and founder of TD Athletes Edge
